︎ SAVOR & SHARE - Mindful Eating Zones on University Campus
In the fast-paced environment of university life, students often prioritize convenience over health, leading to stress and poor eating habits. SAVOR & SHARE reimagines campus dining spaces to promote healthier food choices, mindfulness, and social connection. By integrating calming design elements, sensory engagement, and educational signages, these zones create intentional spaces that encourage students to slow down, savor their meals, and make informed nutritional choices. With a focus on human-centered design, this project fosters a culture of wellness, enhancing the physical and mental well-being of the campus community.

Hypothesis
University dining environments often prioritize convenience and speed over mindfulness and nutrition. This intervention hypothesizes that implementing mindful eating zones on campus will promote healthier eating choices, reduce stress related to meal consumption (Meyer, 2022), and foster social connections, enhancing the overall dining experience for all students.

- Why
Many students struggle to maintain healthy eating habits due to stress (Choi, 2020), time constraints, and the overwhelming number of choices available in dining halls. Creating mindful eating zones addresses these challenges by providing intentional spaces where students can focus on their meals and engage in healthier eating practices. These
zones will promote awareness around food choices and encourage a culture of
mindfulness in eating.
- How
The mindful eating practice encourages students to trust in their own decisions rather than being restricted by rules about what and when to eat (Nelson, 2017). This approach focuses on human-centered design that engages students' physical, cognitive, and social needs in dining spaces. The mindful eating zones will incorporate sensory elements, educational tools, and community-focused design to encourage healthier eating habits and reduce stress associated with food choices.
- What
Calming Design Elements
Incorporate soft lighting, natural materials, and comfortable seating to create a relaxing atmosphere. The design will prioritize accessibility and comfort, allowing students to enjoy their meals in a pleasant environment.
Mindful Eating Practices
Encourage mindful eating through signage and educational materials that promote the benefits
of slowing down and savoring meals. Tips on portion control, balanced meals, and the importance of mindful eating will be available.
Sensory Engagement
Utilize various sensory stimuli, such as the aroma of fresh herbs or the visual appeal of colorful fruits and vegetables, to engage students and encourage them to make healthier choices. Interactive displays could educate students about the nutritional benefits of different foods.
Tactile Signage
Use clear, accessible signage that provides navigation assistance, helping students easily locate healthy food options and mindful eating zones.

As university students increasingly face health, nutrition, and overall well-being challenges, creating mindful eating zones addresses the urgent need for environments that support healthy eating habits. These zones can enhance the overall dining experience for all students by fostering mindfulness and reducing stress associated with meal consumption, promoting long-term health and well-being.
The Link Between Design and Outcomes
Implementing mindful eating zones encourages healthier eating practices among students and creates inclusive spaces that promote social interaction and community engagement. By addressing the needs of all students, these zones can lead to improved health outcomes and a more supportive campus environment.
