Integrating Food and Health for Diabetes Care at Home
By Chun ‘Sheila’ Wang ︎

Hypothesis
For many people with diabetes and mobility challenges, like our persona Ladonna, the kitchen, which suppose to be a space for nourishment, can become a source of stress and limitation. Standard kitchens implemented in apartments often fail to accommodate physical accessibility needs, and daily health management can feel disconnected from everyday routines. Our project addresses this gap by designing a prefabricated, multipurpose kitchen kit-and-part units that seamlessly integrates accessibility, health monitoring, and joyful cooking experiences.

- Why
Many people with diabetes face mobility challenges that make it difficult to use a standard kitchen to prepare healthy meals without stress.
- How
By combining universal design principles with integrated health-monitoring features, we create a kitchen that not only accommodates physical accessibility needs but also supports daily health management, allowing users to cook safely, independently, and confidently.
- What
We promote a series of prefabricated, multi-purpose kitchen units designed to support both accessible cooking and daily diabetes care. It combines wheelchair-friendly design with integrated health-monitoring features, thus building a health hub into their home.
- So What
This allows people with diabetes to manage their health more easily, regain conf idence and enjoyment in cooking, and feel more independent in their daily lives.

The Link Between Design and Outcomes
The unit is thoughtfully designed for wheelchair users and others with mobility constraints, incorporating adjustable counters, pull-out shelves, and ergonomic layouts. Beyond physical accessibility, the kitchen includes integrated health-check features, allowing users to monitor key indicators such as blood sugar, blood pressure, or hydration levels without leaving the cooking space. This integration reduces the burden of managing daily health tasks, creating a more connected and supportive environment. The unit’s modular layout allows customization to fit different home spaces, while smart storage and intuitive workflows streamline meal preparation. By uniting cooking and wellness in one cohesive environment, the design transforms the kitchen into a space where users can prepare healthy meals safely, manage their health effortlessly, and enjoy a more confident and joyful daily experience.
